The Great Bagel Debacle (of '08)

I’ve been running low today (lots of trampoline work this morning). I ate lunch at 11:45.

Then someone brought in bagels around 1:00. I didn’t even check my sugar. I peered in the box and there was a cinnamon sugar one and I took it. And I ate it. And I haven’t had the guts to check my sugar until now.

Four hours later, and I’m still at 128. I know that’s not a terrible number, but it is if you want to eat dinner in the next hour.

Bagels just do terrible, awful, horrible things to my sugar levels. I know this. But I ate one anyway.

I refuse to feel guilty (well, maybe about 3% guilty). I accept that I ate a bagel. I enjoyed the bagel while I ate it. I accept my 128 and will scrape out the inside of my hamburger bun at dinner to lessen my carb count to the best of my ability.

Plllhhhhhh on you, diabetes.

As always, more to come…

Look, everyone deserves a bagel now then. You bolused for it, your watched your blood sugar, you handled it. 128 is not a terrible number at all. Hamburger buns are over rated anyway. I take 1 half of the bun and make 1/2 a super cheeseburger w. the works. I eat the other half of the burger sans bun and piled high with fixings.
Pardon the pun, but I RELISH it!

Thanks for the validation, Kelly. I was trying to validate myself, and your comment helped. I also like the idea of the half-a-bun, so you feel like you're eating a real cheeseburger. Usually I scrape out the insides, but this sounds like a potentially better and tastier alternative.

By the way, though, I don't bolus. I'm strictly on the Lantus, so I'm stuck on the cycle of: eat, wait for sugar to drop, eat, wait for sugar to drop, etc. I only do the one shot of 36-40 units of Lantus nightly and that's it for the next 24 hours. I can't adjust for anything I eat, so I tend to be a little more paranoid when I eat something more than I should.

I'm learning to be a little easier on myself. I was taught that I had to keep my numbers between 80-110 and it's taken me a long time to start to be okay with numbers that go higher than that.

I am still just a grasshopper in the world of diabetes, and I am grateful for your help, Sensei.

Lora -

WOW - No one ever called me a Senei b4 - COOL - THANKS!

I was not aware you weren't bolusing - sorry about that!
Look, day to day diabetes is different that what the text books say. Every day is different.
Your doing a great job, keep it up.
And for sure try the Half A Bun Cheeseburger, it's delicious!
